Test Details

The FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) test is a blood test that measures the levels of FSH in the bloodstream. FSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, and its levels can provide valuable information about reproductive health, especially in women

Blood Sample: A healthcare provider will collect a blood sample, typically from a vein in your arm, using a needle and syringe or a specialized blood collection tube.

Laboratory Analysis: The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. There, the concentration of FSH is quantified.

Fasting or specific preparation is generally not required for the FSH test. You can typically eat and drink normally before the test.

You may feel a brief pinch or discomfort when the needle is inserted to draw the blood sample. Afterward, there might be some mild bruising or soreness at the site, but this is usually temporary.

Normal FSH levels vary depending on age and gender. In women, FSH levels typically fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle. In general, normal FSH levels for women of reproductive age are lower during the follicular phase (days 1-14) and rise during ovulation (around day 14).

Ovarian dysfunction: Elevated FSH levels in women can indicate decreased ovarian reserve, premature ovarian failure, or menopause.

Pituitary issues: Low FSH levels may suggest problems with the pituitary gland, such as hypopituitarism.

Fertility problems: Imbalances in FSH levels can contribute to fertility issues, irregular menstrual cycles, or conditions like PCOS.

The FSH test is a routine blood test and is generally safe. Risks are minimal and may include:

Mild bruising at the blood sample site.

Rarely, fainting or lightheadedness during or after the blood draw.
