Test Details

The TORCH-5 IGM test is a diagnostic blood test used to detect the presence of IgM antibodies against specific pathogens. TORCH is an acronym that stands for Toxoplasma, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes simplex virus (HSV), and other infections. This test helps identify recent or active infections with these pathogens, particularly in pregnant women to assess the risk of transmitting infections to the fetus

Blood Sample: A healthcare provider will collect a blood sample, typically from a vein in your arm, using a needle and a syringe or a specialized blood collection tube.

Laboratory Analysis: The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. There, the presence of IgM antibodies against the TORCH pathogens is determined.

Fasting or special preparation is typically not required for the TORCH-5 IGM test. You can usually eat and drink as usual before the test

You may feel a brief pinch or discomfort when the needle is inserted to draw the blood sample. After the procedure, there might be some mild bruising or soreness at the site, but this is typically temporary.

Normal results for the TORCH-5 IGM test mean that IgM antibodies against the TORCH pathogens are not detected in the blood. This suggests the absence of recent or active infections

Recent or Active Infections: The presence of IgM antibodies against one or more of the TORCH pathogens suggests recent or active infections. Further testing may be needed to confirm the specific infection.

The TORCH-5 IGM test is a routine blood test and is generally safe. Risks are minimal and may include:

Mild bruising at the blood sample site.

Rarely, fainting or lightheadedness during or after the blood draw

The TORCH-5 IGM test may also be known as:

TORCH panel IgM test

TORCH screen IgM test

Congenital infection screen IgM test
