Test Details

The Bilirubin Total, Direct, and Indirect test measures the levels of bilirubin, a yellow pigment, in your blood. Bilirubin is a waste product produced when your liver breaks down old red blood cells. This test assesses the different forms of bilirubin to diagnose and monitor various liver and blood disorders.

The Bilirubin Total, Direct, and Indirect test is conducted as follows:

A healthcare provider will insert a needle into a vein, usually in your arm.

A blood sample is collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

There's typically no special preparation required for this test. You can eat and drink normally before the blood draw. However, if your healthcare provider has specific instructions, make sure to follow them

During the blood draw, you might experience a brief pinching or stinging sensation at the needle insertion site. This discomfort is generally mild and temporary.

Normal bilirubin levels may vary slightly between laboratories, but typically, the reference range for total bilirubin in adults is around 0.3 to 1.9 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Abnormal bilirubin results can indicate various medical conditions:

Elevated Total Bilirubin: High levels of total bilirubin can suggest liver problems, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, or increased red blood cell breakdown.

Direct Bilirubin Elevation: Elevated direct bilirubin may indicate issues with bile ducts or liver diseases that affect bile processing.

Indirect Bilirubin Elevation: Elevated indirect bilirubin can result from conditions like hemolytic anemia, where red blood cells are destroyed too quickly.

The pattern and extent of bilirubin elevation provide valuable information for diagnosis and treatment.

The Bilirubin Total, Direct, and Indirect test is a common blood test with minimal risks. The primary risk is mild discomfort or bruising at the needle insertion site. Serious complications are extremely rare.

The Bilirubin Total, Direct, and Indirect test may also be referred to by the following alternative names:
