Test Details

The LIPID PROFILE test is a blood test that assesses the levels of lipids (fats) and cholesterol in the bloodstream. It provides valuable information about an individual's cardiovascular health by measuring cholesterol types, including high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides.

Blood Sample: A healthcare provider will collect a blood sample, typically from a vein in your arm, using a needle and a syringe or a specialized blood collection tube.

Laboratory Analysis: The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. There, the levels of various lipids and cholesterol components are measured.

Fasting is often required for accurate results. Typically, you will need to fast for 9-12 hours before the test. This means no food or drink except water during the fasting period

You may feel a brief pinch or discomfort when the needle is inserted to draw the blood sample. Afterward, there might be some mild bruising or soreness at the site, but this is typically temporary

Normal results for the LIPID PROFILE test typically include:

Total Cholesterol: Below 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

HDL Cholesterol: Above 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women.

LDL Cholesterol: Below 100 mg/dL (lower is better).

Triglycerides: Below 150 mg/dL.

Abnormal results can indicate various conditions, such as:

High Total Cholesterol: Increased risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease.

Low HDL Cholesterol: Higher risk of heart disease.

High LDL Cholesterol: Increased risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease.

High Triglycerides: Elevated triglyceride levels can also increase the risk of heart disease.

The LIPID PROFILE test is a routine blood test and is generally safe. Risks are minimal and may include:

Mild bruising at the blood sample site.

Rarely, fainting or lightheadedness during or after the blood draw.
