Test Details

The FT3-FT4-TSH test, also known as the thyroid function test, is a blood test that measures the levels of thyroid hormones and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the bloodstream. It assesses the function of the thyroid gland, which plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and various bodily functions.

Blood Sample: A healthcare provider will collect a blood sample, typically from a vein in your arm, using a needle and syringe or a specialized blood collection tube.

Laboratory Analysis: The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. There, the concentrations of free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and TSH are measured.

Fasting or specific preparation is generally not required for the FT3-FT4-TSH test. You can typically eat and drink normally before the test.

However, inform your healthcare provider about any medications, supplements, or medical conditions you may have, as they can affect thyroid hormone levels.

You may feel a brief pinch or discomfort when the needle is inserted to draw the blood sample. Afterward, there might be some mild bruising or soreness at the site, but this is usually temporary.

Normal results for the FT3-FT4-TSH test vary depending on the laboratory and the specific reference ranges used. However, typical reference ranges may include:

FT3: 2.0 to 4.4 picograms per milliliter (pg/mL).

FT4: 0.7 to 2.0 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL).

TSH: 0.4 to 4.0 microinternational units per milliliter (μIU/mL).

Hyperthyroidism: Elevated FT3 and FT4 with decreased TSH levels may suggest an overactive thyroid.

Hypothyroidism: Decreased FT3 and FT4 with elevated TSH levels may indicate an underactive thyroid.

Other thyroid disorders: Abnormal results may suggest thyroid nodules, thyroiditis, or other thyroid-related conditions.

The FT3-FT4-TSH test is a routine blood test and is generally safe. Risks are minimal and may include:

Mild bruising at the blood sample site.

Rarely, fainting or lightheadedness during or after the blood draw
