Test Details

The HBA1C test, also known as the hemoglobin A1C test or glycated hemoglobin test, is a blood test used to measure the average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past two to three months. It is commonly used to diagnose and monitor diabetes and assess how well an individual's diabetes is being managed.

Blood Sample: A healthcare provider collects a blood sample, usually from a vein in the arm, using a needle and a syringe or through a fingerstick.

Laboratory Analysis: The blood sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is analyzed to measure the percentage of hemoglobin that is glycated, or bound to glucose.

No specific preparation, such as fasting, is required for the HBA1C test. It can be performed at any time of the day, with or without food.

Patients may feel a brief pinch or discomfort when the needle is inserted for the blood sample. Fingerstick tests are less invasive and usually cause minimal discomfort

Normal HBA1C results vary slightly among healthcare providers and organizations, but in general, a normal result is typically below 5.7%. The specific target level for an individual may vary based on their diabetes management plan.

Abnormal HBA1C results can indicate:

Diabetes: An HBA1C level of 6.5% or higher may indicate diabetes.

Prediabetes: An HBA1C level between 5.7% and 6.4% may suggest prediabetes.

Poor Blood Sugar Control: In individuals with diabetes, higher HBA1C levels suggest poor blood sugar control, increasing the risk of diabetes-related complications

The HBA1C test is a safe and routine blood test with minimal risks. Risks associated with the test include:

Mild discomfort or pain during blood sample collection.

Rarely, bleeding, infection, or bruising at the blood draw site.
