Test Details

The FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE test is a common blood test that measures the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood after an overnight fast. It is a key diagnostic tool for assessing blood sugar levels, screening for diabetes, and monitoring glucose control in individuals with diabetes.

Blood Sample: A healthcare provider will collect a blood sample, typically from a vein in your arm, using a needle and a syringe or a specialized blood collection tube.

Laboratory Analysis: The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. Glucose concentration in the blood is measured, and the results are reported in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or millimoles per liter (mmol/L).

For accurate results, fasting for a specific period (usually 8 to 12 hours) is required before the FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE test. During this time, you should avoid eating or drinking anything other than water.

You may feel a brief pinch or discomfort when the needle is inserted to draw the blood sample. Afterward, there might be some mild bruising or soreness at the site, but this is typically temporary.

Normal fasting blood glucose levels typically fall within a specific reference range, such as 70-99 mg/dL (3.9-5.5 mmol/L). Your healthcare provider will interpret your results based on your specific circumstances.

Diabetes: Elevated fasting blood glucose levels may suggest diabetes. In such cases, additional testing may be needed to confirm the diagnosis and determine the type of diabetes.

Prediabetes: Slightly elevated blood glucose levels can indicate prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range.

Hypoglycemia: Abnormally low fasting blood glucose levels may suggest hypoglycemia, which can be caused by various factors, including medications and certain medical conditions.

The FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE test is a routine blood test and is generally safe. Risks are minimal and may include:

Mild bruising at the blood sample site.

Rarely, fainting or lightheadedness during or after the blood draw.
