Test Details

The BILIRUBIN, TOTAL test measures the levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. This test is used to assess liver and gallbladder function and diagnose various liver and blood disorders.

The BILIRUBIN, TOTAL test is performed as follows:

A healthcare provider will insert a needle into a vein, usually in your arm.

A blood sample is collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Typically, no specific preparation is needed for this test. You can eat and drink normally before the blood draw. However, if your healthcare provider has specific instructions, make sure to follow them.

During the blood draw, you might experience a brief pinching or stinging sensation at the needle insertion site. This discomfort is generally mild and temporary.

Normal bilirubin levels may vary slightly between laboratories, but typically, the reference range is around 0.3 to 1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Abnormal bilirubin results can indicate various medical conditions:

Elevated Bilirubin: High bilirubin levels may suggest liver diseases, hemolytic anemias, bile duct obstruction, or other conditions affecting bilirubin metabolism.

Decreased Bilirubin: Low bilirubin levels are rare but may occur in certain genetic disorders or malnutrition.

The specific pattern of abnormality can provide valuable information for diagnosis and treatment.

The BILIRUBIN, TOTAL test is a common blood test with minimal risks. The primary risk is mild discomfort or bruising at the needle insertion site. Serious complications are extremely rare.

The BILIRUBIN, TOTAL test may also be referred to by the following alternative names:
