Test Details

The Liver Function Test (LFT) is a group of blood tests that assess the health and function of the liver. These tests measure various substances in the blood to evaluate the liver's ability to perform its vital functions, including metabolizing nutrients, processing drugs, and producing proteins.

The LFT is performed by taking a blood sample:

A healthcare provider will insert a needle into a vein, usually in the arm.

A blood sample is collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis

Generally, no specific preparation is required for an LFT. You can eat and drink normally before the blood draw. However, if your healthcare provider has specific instructions, it's essential to follow them.

During the blood draw, you may experience a brief pinching or stinging sensation at the needle insertion site. However, this discomfort is usually mild and short-lived.

Normal LFT results can vary slightly between laboratories, but generally, they include:

Total Protein: 6.3 to 7.9 grams per deciliter (g/dL)

Albumin: 3.4 to 5.4 g/dL

Total Bilirubin: 0.1 to 1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL)

Direct Bilirubin: 0.0 to 0.3 mg/dL

Alkaline Phosphatase: 44 to 147 international units per liter (IU/L)

Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST): 10 to 40 IU/L

Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT): 7 to 56 IU/L

Normal ranges may vary depending on the laboratory and the specific tests performed.

Abnormal LFT results may suggest various liver conditions or issues, such as liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, or medication-induced liver damage. The specific pattern of abnormal results can provide valuable information about the underlying liver problem.

The LFT is a routine blood test with minimal risks. The primary risk is mild discomfort or bruising at the needle insertion site. Serious complications are extremely rare.

The Liver Function Test (LFT) may also be referred to by the following alternative names:

The LFT is a crucial tool for assessing liver health and diagnosing liver conditions. It is often included in routine blood panels to evaluate overall health and liver function.
