Test Details

The THYROID FUNCTION TESTS, often referred to as thyroid panel or thyroid profile, is a group of blood tests that assess the functioning of the thyroid gland. These tests measure various thyroid hormones and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in the blood to evaluate thyroid health and diagnose thyroid disorders.

Blood Sample: A healthcare provider will collect a blood sample, usually from a vein in your arm, using a needle and a syringe or a specialized blood collection tube.

Laboratory Analysis: The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. Multiple thyroid hormones, including TSH, thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3), are measured to assess thyroid function

You may feel a brief pinch or discomfort when the needle is inserted to draw the blood sample. Afterward, there might be some mild bruising or soreness at the site, but this is typically temporary.

Normal results for thyroid function tests generally fall within the reference ranges established by the laboratory. Reference ranges may vary slightly among laboratories but typically include:

TSH: Approximately 0.4 to 4.0 milliunits per liter (mU/L).

T4 (Thyroxine): Approximately 4.5 to 11.2 micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dL).

T3 (Triiodothyronine): Approximately 100 to 200 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL).

Hypothyroidism: Elevated TSH levels with low T4 and T3 levels suggest an underactive thyroid.

Hyperthyroidism: Low TSH levels with elevated T4 and T3 levels indicate an overactive thyroid.

The THYROID FUNCTION TESTS are routine blood tests and are generally safe. Risks are minimal and may include:

Mild bruising at the blood sample site.

Rarely, fainting or lightheadedness during or after the blood draw.
