Test Details

The RENAL FUNCTION TEST (RFT) is a group of blood and urine tests that assess the functioning of the kidneys. These tests measure various parameters to evaluate how well the kidneys are filtering waste products from the blood and maintaining the body's fluid and electrolyte balance.

Blood Sample: A healthcare provider will collect a blood sample, typically from a vein in your arm, using a needle and a syringe or a specialized blood collection tube.

Urine Sample: A urine sample may also be collected for specific RFT tests, such as creatinine clearance or proteinuria assessment.

Laboratory Analysis: The blood and urine samples are sent to a laboratory for analysis. Various parameters, including creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and electrolyte levels, are measured to assess kidney function.

Fasting or special preparation is generally not required for most RENAL FUNCTION TEST (RFT) components. However, specific instructions may be provided for certain tests within the panel.

For the blood sample, you may feel a brief pinch or discomfort when the needle is inserted to draw the blood sample. Afterward, there might be some mild bruising or soreness at the site, but this is typically temporary. Collecting a urine sample is a straightforward process and is generally painless.

Normal results for RENAL FUNCTION TEST (RFT) components fall within the reference ranges established by the laboratory. Reference ranges may vary slightly among laboratories but typically include:

Creatinine: Approximately 0.6 to 1.3 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Approximately 7 to 20 mg/dL.

Electrolytes: Sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate levels should fall within specified reference ranges.

Abnormal results can indicate various kidney or metabolic conditions, such as:

Kidney disease: Elevated creatinine or BUN levels may suggest impaired kidney function.

Electrolyte imbalances: Abnormal electrolyte levels can indicate issues like dehydration, electrolyte disorders, or kidney dysfunction.

The RENAL FUNCTION TEST (RFT) is a routine blood and urine test and is generally safe. Risks are minimal and may include:

Mild bruising at the blood sample site.

Rarely, fainting or lightheadedness during or after the blood draw.
